New 4-hydroxy-1-thiocoumarin derivs. have formula (I): (where X is H, Cl, Br or NO2). Cpds. (I) are anticoagulants with higher activity, a shorter latent period (18-36 hr.), less side-effects and lower toxicity than the corresp. 4-hydroxycoumarin derivs. They can be used, e.g., in the treatment of thrombosis, thrombophlebitis and heart disease. In an example, (I; X = H) is prepd. from 4-hydroxy-1-thiocoumarin and 1-phenyl-1-penten-3-one.
