APPARATUS AND METHOD FOR HANDOFF USING DATA DECODING IN BROADBAND WIRELESS ACCESS SYSTEM

An apparatus and a method for handoff using data demodulation in a broadband wireless access system are provided to enable a user terminal to apply a demodulation error rate detecting method when receiving a DL-MAP(Downlink-MAP) as a handoff execution standard, thereby acquiring stable handoff in a cell boundary area and improving the performance of the system. A broadband wireless access system comprises the followings: a serving base station(410) which services user terminals; at least one neighboring base station(420) which is adjacent to the serving base station; and a user terminal(430) which receives data transmitted from the serving base station and plural base stations including at least one neighboring base station, demodulates the received data, and detects its demodulation error rate, and performs handoff to a base station of which the demodulation error rate is low among the data transmitted from the base stations.
