The lifting ring (3) for a chain sling is provided with two slide plates (1a) (1b) which are secured by rivets (2). The side plates (1a) (1b) which are secured by rivets (2). The side plates (1a) (1b) are joined by V shaped spacers (6a) (6b) which fit in slots (7) and are fixed by welding. Each space is provided with a central slot (5) with a width slightly greater than the thickness of the chain links. The chain links (14a) (14b) can be fitted edgeways into the slots (5) and are retained by the adjacent links (15a) (15b) when the sling is under tension due to the load. The fitting of the side plates (1a) (1b) provide a simple means of adjusting the length of the sling to suit the load being lifted.
