Braking circuit for tape recorder motor - has electromagnet attracting spool shaft sideways to increase bearing friction

The braking circuit, for a tape recorder or record player motor etc. provides adequate braking at all speeds without damaging the main windings of the motor. The spool or turntable (17) shaft (18) is made of magnetic material and mounted on two bearings (19). The shaft is driven by a belt (25) connecting the pulley (22) to that of the drive motor (24). An electromagnet or coil (20) is located alongside the shaft and attracts it. When the motor is braked normally the electromagnet is also energised and the shaft presses laterally against its bearings. The resulting friction between shaft and bearings slows the shaft.
