Automatic brake for furniture castor - has sprung pivot axis and internally operating brake shoes pushed against inner rim of wheel

The castor is pivotted about a vertical axle (4) which is joined to the bearing support (8) by a compressible, sprung section (9). The shaft above the sprung section is fitted with brake shoes (22, 23) which press onto the inside surfaces of the hollow castor wheels (19, 20) when the spring is released. When the furniture item is unloaded then the spring extends and operates the brake. A large area of brake contact is provided, with no grease etc. on the floor and face of the wheels affecting the braking effect. The brake has few components with the brakes surfaces moulded as part of the shaft.
