Thiophosphonic and thiophosphinic acid halides prodn. - by reacting phosphonic or phosphinic acid halides with thiophosphoryl chloride

Process for prepn. of thiophosphonic and thiophosphinic acid halides of formula R-R(=S(X)R1 (I) (in which R = 1-20C alkyl, 2-20C alkenyl, 7-12C aralkyl or 6-10C aryl gp. opt. substd. by 1-3 Cl, Br, alkyl or alkoxy gps. with 1-4 C; X = halogen, esp. Cl; and R1 = R or X) comprises reacting phosphonic or phosphinic acid halides R-P(=O)R1 (II) with thiophophoryl chloride (III) at 140-250 degrees C, pref. 150-200 degrees C and at atmospheric press., and continuously distilling off the POCl3 formed. Process is simple to operate, uses easily obtainable raw materials, and gives high yields of the desired prods. (I) are useful intermediates for plant protection agents, polymeric organophosphorus cpds., selective extn. agents and additives for pressure resistant oils.
