An apparatus and a method for inputting a key in a portable terminal are provided to employ a key section including keys classified into two regions. An apparatus for inputting a key in a portable terminal includes a key section(127), and a controller(110). The key section(127) is divided into at least two regions to include keys allocated with data corresponding to the regions. The controller performs a control operation such that data corresponding to a predetermined key are displayed if the key is pressed through the key section. The controller allows the display of only data corresponding to one region of the two regions in a data input mode for the corresponding region in which only data of the region are displayed. The controller allows the display of data set in a key group including the key.
