Welding tubes into tube plastes by explosion plating - using steel plug to prevent bulging of the tube near the tube plate

Device welds metal tubes in the tube plates of vessels by explosive plating, where the explosive charge is located inside the end of the tube inserted in the tube plate. A steel plug is placed in the tube behind the charge, the plug having a head (a) with a major dia. (D1) next to the charge, and the head (a) is followed by a shank with a minor dia. (D2); the major dia. (D1) of the plug matches the bore of the tube, and the back end of the head is aligned with the inside surface of the tube plate. The front end of the plug head adjacent to the charge is pref. conical. In mfg. chemical plant and heat exchangers. Explosion plating is inexpensive and can also be used to join metals which cannot be welded by other means. The use of explosion plating has been restricted because it has caused the tubes to bulge outwards near the tube plate. This invention eliminates this disadvantage.
