Spark pistol with spectral analyser - for determining the composition of metal samples using TV display

The chemical compsn of metals is determined by objective spectral analytical technique. Metal vapour is produced by hand held spark gun, the radiation from which is transmitted to a spectroscope by means of a flexible light conductor cable. The spectrum produced by the refraction prism is fed onto the light sensitive layer of a TV camera. It is then re-produced on a monitor screen. Here it can be compared with a reference spectrum produced by an auxiliary device. This consists of a reference object which is also sparked and the signal fed back by means of a flexible light conductor. A reference spectrum can also be reproduced by a video recorder. Used esp. for use in stainless vessel warehouses where a large variety of different grades of steel are stocked.
