The rear axle of the heavy vehicle is fitted with a multi element disc brake on each side of the differential, with the brakes driven by the drive shafts, to the reduction gears in the rear wheels. The brakes are cooled by external cooling discs. linked to a cooling circuit, and occupy a minimum of space between the differential and the hub reduction gearings. The front wheels are braked conventionally. - The brake control is such that for normal retarding control only the rear brakes operate while for heavy braking all the brakes operate. The fully encapsulated brakes are simpler than dynamic retarders and occupy less space.
