1490259 Disc brakes; preventing rattle; springs BENDIX CORP 2 June 1975 [28 June 1974] 23843/75 Headings F2E and F2S A disc brake incorporates an anti-rattle spring 44 provided between an edge 34 of a notch 28 in torque member 18 and an edge 42 of a projection 40 of a friction element 36, the spring 44 comprising a loop-shaped body portion 46 presenting a pair of edges 48, 50 from which legs 52, 54 extend, the resiliency of the body portion 46 yieldably urging the legs 52, 54 apart; the arms 52, 54 are located in the gap between edge 42 and edge 34 but the body portion 46 is not located in this gap. The leg 52 includes portions 56, 58 interconnected by a portion 60 which portions 56, 58, 60 define a recess to receive projection 40, and a detent 61 projects from edge 48 to engage the friction element 36 to prevent displacement thereof. An aperture 63 is defined in leg 52 sufficiently wide to receive the leg 54. The torque member 18 illustrated slidably mounts by bearing surfaces 78 a slidable caliper 62 incorporating an actuating piston 68 to actuate friction element 36 and portions 74, 76 to actuate an opposite friction element 38 by reaction. One bearing surface 78 engages a bearing surface 80 on a key 82 releasably held on the torque member 18 by a thumbscrew 84, and an anti-rattle spring 86 is disposed between key 82 and bearing surface 78. The other bearing surface directly engages the corresponding bearing surface on torque member 18. When the brake is applied, in use, with the vehicle travelling in reverse, the projection 40 is moved towards edge 34 to drive leg 52 towards leg 54 stressing body portion 46, the anchoring forces being transmitted through the spring 44 from projection 40 to edge 34. When the vehicle is travelling forwards the friction element 36 will anchor against a notch (not shown) carried by an arm 22 of torque member 18. The brake may have a sliding frame or a fixed caliper with a spring 44 inserted between one pad and the frame or caliper. Springs 44 may be provided for each pad on at least one of its circumferentially spaced ends.
