For the transmission of energy, hydrogen is mfd. and is liquefied for transport by air. During mfr. deuterium is collected separately. Specifically, the hydrogen is produced from a fuel such as natural gas or coal, using heat from a nuclear reactor. The fuel may be partially burned or it may be converted catalytically by means of steam. Air is fractionated by fractional condensation and the liq. nitrogen resulting is used for liquefying the hydrogen, whilst the oxygen obtd. is used for the partial combustion. The fuel may be reformed by means of steam resulting from the burning of part of the hydrogen with part of the oxygen. The steam produced is expanded first in a turbine used for generating power to drive the compressor for the fractional condensation. Method allows cheap transport of energy over long distances. Hydrogen has a high combustion value per unit of weight, its energy content being three times that of liquefied natural gas. The deuterium formed is useful or heavy water mfr.
|
