A compound of the formula I is prepared by oxidative treatment of a corresponding prostaglandin or prostaglandin-C1 to C4 ester with a halogenating agent. During this process, the 11 hydroxyl and 15 hydroxyl groups can be temporarily protected. By reducing the compounds, in which R denotes bromine or iodine, the corresponding compounds which are unsubstituted in the 5 position can be prepared. The compounds of the formula I, and their reduced derivatives, can be employed as drugs or as intermediates in chemical processes. <IMAGE>
