(5Z)-5,6-Didehydro-9-deoxy-6,9 alpha-epoxyprostaglandin F1 alpha derivs. of formula (I) are novel cpds. In (I) R=H or a pharmacologically acceptable cation (esp. Na) and Z1, Z2=H or a blocking radical e.g. acyl or trialkylsilyl.(I) (R, Z1Z2=H) (known as prostacycline), and its salts is a useful intermediate for the synthesis of cpds. analogous to prostaglandins and has a strong antiaggreation effect on blood platelets, and is used in the prophylaxis and treatment of thromboses. Protacycline also inhibits and controls excessive gastric, secretion (avoiding or attenuating gastro-intestinal ulcers and lesions and accelerating their healing), is a vasodilator used particularly as an antihypertensive and favours the healing of wounds.The cpds. are usually administered parenterally (intravenously, sub-cutaneously or intramuscularly) in doses of 0.01-200 mg/kg, pref.0.01-10 mg/kg
