A hammer mill has a cylindrical vessel with an inlet at one end and an outlet at the other, mounted on a base so that it can be tilted. A shaft (13) through the middle carries a set of hammer arms (21) which swing about hinge rods (22) parallel to the shaft. The shaft is supported resiliently so that it is vibrated to assist travel of the material through the vessel. This vessel has a cooling jacket, and the shaft carries a fan. The hammer arms are arranged in sets of three (21, 21', 21") and form a helical path through the vessel from end to end. Each arm is located between discs (23) mounted on the shaft, and another disc with a flat (24) across it is also mounted between the same two discs (23).
