The printing machine magazine-type head has one or more chambers in two parts, and is particularly for printing onto plastic items. A number of printing plates (35) are accommodated in stacks in each of the chamber parts, those in the first part being transferred one by one into the second by a drive mechanism (20, 22, 23). On the return stroke, this mechanism transfers a plate from the second part back into a printing position in the first part. Each plate can have an oblong portion bearing a character, and beads running along the longer sides. These beads extend above the character surface for a distance greater than the character protrudes from this surface.
