<p>1494364 Studs ILLINOIS TOOL WORKS Inc 4 March 1975 [6 March 1974] 9025/75 Heading F2H [Also in Division B3] A stud 10 comprises a threaded or splined shank 14, a flange 16 having a recess 20 at one end of the shank, and a heat-activatable synthetic resin adhesive 32 carried substantially entirely within one or more channels formed by the thread(s) or splines, the arrangement being such that when the shank is driven into a bore 36 in a workpiece 34 until the flange abuts the workpiece, the bore diameter d 1 being less than the maximum diameter d 2 of the threaded or splined shank but greater than the shank diameter, some but not all of the adhesive is forced into the recess so that when heat is applied the adhesive becomes a fluid which can subsequently set to assist locking the shank to the bore and the flange to the workpiece. As shown, the shank may be provided with two helical screw-threads 26, 29 spaced apart from each other by root portions 30. Another shank 12 may extend from face 18 of flange 16 coaxially with respect to shank 14. Shank 12 may be provided with a screw-thread 24 of the same hand as that on shank 14. Shank 14 may be provided with a cutting edge 38 at the end remote from the flange. The adhesive may be a partially cured thermosetting epoxy resin.</p> |
