1494600 Sawing AETNA-STANDARD ENG CO 17 May 1976 [17 June 1975] 20342/76 Heading B5L Apparatus for severing successive lengths from continuously moving elongate work such as rod, pipe or tubing of the type having a cutting tool, e.g. saw 40, movable in a circular path, means for guiding the work in a normal path spaced a short distance from such circular path, and means for periodically deflecting the work from its normal path into the path of the tool, comprises a main rotary crank arm 20, a stabilizing rotary crank arm 30 parallel to and spaced from said main crank arm, a connecting rod 36 pivotally connected between the main crank arm and the stabilizing crank arm, counterweights 34, 35 mounted on said crank arms at the ends thereof remote from said connecting rod, and means 29 mounting said cutting tool at the end of said main crank arm near said connecting rod. The arms 20, 30 are of a telescoping construction and the radius of both arms can be adjusted simultaneously by screw means, e.g. 51, while the machine is in operation, the position of counterweight also 34 being adjusted at the same time. Furthermore screw jacks 15 raise or lower the frame 13 on which the cranks are mounted at the same time as the crank radius is adjusted so that the lowermost point of orbit of the saw blade remains the same. The means for deflecting the work into the path of the saw include a rotary wheel (152) with notched inserts 153 the wheel being mounted in a housing 157 which is vertically reciprocable by eccentrics, the housing 157 and eccentrics being mounted on a pivoted bracket structure 171 which can be rapidly lowered in emergency by toggle means 190 operated by fluid pressure cylinder 179. The speeds of rotation and vertical reciprocation of the wheel 152 are in suitably timed relation to the orbital movements of the saw. With a constant line speed of the work the cut lengths can be changed, e.g. by increasing the crank arm rotary speed and decreasing the crank arm radius for shorter lengths and vice versa for longer lengths.
