The multistage voltage convertor (1) has a switching network (4) for selective activation of direct current energy accumulators (3) on a voltage system, and a control unit for controlling the switching network. The control unit is provided for determining the voltage level of the output voltage from the detected actual voltages of the direct current energy accumulator obtained by the switching network and for controlling the switching network depending on the detected accessible voltage level. An independent claim is also included for a method for controlling a multistage voltage convertor.
