An apparatus and method for generating a pressure pulse of known magnitude are disclosed. A first chamber is hydraulically linked to a second chamber. A third chamber is hydraulically linked to the second chamber. A fourth chamber is hydraulically linked to the third chamber via a valve. A fifth chamber is hydraulically linked with the fourth chamber via a second valve and is connected to a probe. The second chamber is filled with a gas. The first, third, fourth and fifth chambers are filled with an incompressible fluid. Means for sensing pressure in the third, fourth and fifth chamber, or the probe, are provided. A pressure pulse corresponding to the sensed pressure differential between the fourth and fifth chambers with the second valve closed is generated by opening the second valve with the first valve shut to isolate the first, second and third chambers from the fourth chamber.
