A pharmaceutical composition for preventing and treating viral hepatitis type B contains an extract of the plant of Hovenia dulcis. Preferably the plant of Hovenia dulcis is any one selected from the group consisting of Hovenia dulcis Thunberg, Hovenia dulcis var Koreana Nakai, Hovenia dulcis var Latifolia Nakai and Hovenia dulcis var tomentella Makino.
