A copolymer contg. internal dicarboxylic acid anhydride gps. is crosslinked by (1) dispersing in the polymer a primary polyamine salt having a decompsn. temp. (T1) greater than the temp. (T2) at which the polymer becomes plastic but less than the temp. (T3) at which the polymer degrades and (2) heating the mixt. at a temp. greater than T1 and less than T3. The mixt. pref. contains a reinforcing filler which is pref. first added to the polymer before adding the anhydride. The process results in complete and almost immediate vulcanisation of the polymer and the crosslinking bonds are thermally stable. Risks of scorching and inadequate or excessive crosslinking are avoided. The process is partic. suitable for rubbers.
