1401924 Stabilizing polymers SANKYO CO Ltd 1 Oct 1973 [4 Oct 1972] 45789/73 Headings C3P and C3R [Also in Division C2] Synthetic polymers are stabilized with aminopiperidine derivatives of formula where in R1 and R2 are alkyl or together with the carbon atom form a tetramethylpiperidyl group; R3 is alkyl, substituted alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, aralkyl or substituted aralkyl; n is 1, 2 or 3; when n is 1 R4 is H, R3, cycloalkyl, aryl, substituted aryl, monoacyl, alkoxycarbonyl, aralkoxycarbonyl, carbamoyl, N-substituted carbamoyl, thiocarbamoyl, N-substituted thiocarbamoyl, a monovalent group derived from a non-carboxylic oxo acid, or R4 and R5 together with the nitrogen atom form a phthalimido group; when n is 2 R4 is alkylene, alkenylene, aralkylene, arylene, diacyl, carbonyl, N-substituted dicarbamoyl, N-substituted bis-thiocarbamoyl, a divalent group derived from a non-carboxylic oxo acid, or R4 and R5 together with the nitrogen atom form a pyromellitodiimide group; when n is 3 R4 is alkanetriyl, aralkanetriyl, triacyl, a trivalent group derived from a non-carboxylic oxo acid, (-(CH 2 ) m O) 3 P or (-(CH 2 ) m O) 3 PO where m is 1 to 4: and R5 is H, R3, cycloalkyl, aryl, substituted aryl, alkoxycarbonylalkenyl or a 5- or 6-membered heterocyclic group containing one or more N, O and/or S atoms, or when R4 is alkylene, alkenylene, aralkylene, arylene, alkanetriyl or aralkanetriyl R may also be monoacyl, alkoxycarbonyl, aralkoxycarbonyl, carbamoyl, N-substituted carbamoyl, thiocarbamoyl, N-substituted thiocarbamoyl or a monovalent group derived from a non-carboxylic oxo acid. The polymers may be polymers and copolymers of olefins, conjugated diolefins, styrene, vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride, polyacetals such as polyoxymethylene and polyoxyethylene, polyesters such as polyethylene terephthalate, polyamides such as nylon-6, nylon-6,6 and nylon-6,10 and polyurethanes. Conventional antioxidants, light stabilizers, metal deactivators, peroxide deactivators and nucleating agents may also be present. Many stabilizers are listed and examples describe the stabilizing of (1 and 9) polypropylene, (2 and 9) polyethylene, (3) polystyrene, (4) ABS resin, (5) nylon-6, (6) polycaprolactone polyurethane, (7) polyvinyl chloride with dibutyltin maleate and butyl stearate and (8) unsaturated polyester resin.
