The display cell which comprises a fine film (13) of nematic liquid crystal between two electrodes (14, 15) formed by plates, one or both of which are transparent. The cell has a device for aligning the molecules situated at the surface of the liquid crystal film, e.g. by application of a potential difference across the electrodes. One of the two main surfaces of the film is covered by a solid, transparent material whose refractive index corresponds with either the ordinary or extraordinary index of the liquid crystals. Alternatively, particles of this solid, transparent material may be dispersed in the crystal film.
