1517436 Isotope separation using irradiation KRAFTWERK UNION AG 27 May 1976 [30 May 1975] 22178/76 Heading C1A An isotope mixture is irradiated at such a frequency that the molecules of the component(s) which are to be separated from the mixture are selectively excited; chemical reaction then takes place between these excited molecules and free atoms or free radicals as a co-reactant which has been obtained by dissociation of a starting material, the mixture obtained is then removed from the reaction zone and the reaction product is separated by known means outside the reactor, the rate of flow of the mixture through the reactor is regulated to ensure that the coreactant is already recombining to form the starting material. In the Example an isotopic mixture of UF 6 is treated to selectively excite 235 UF 6 which may react with atomic hydrogen, nitrogen or oxygen or with CH 3 or CHO radicals to form UF 5 or UF 4 . |
