<p>The rim (1) for an automobile wheel is of relatively small radial depth. The stiffness of the rim is improved by forming a circumferential depression which results in a local reduction in the thickness of the wall (4). The material from the region of reduced thickness is forced into the shoulders (5) and (6). The strength of the material in these regions (5, 6) is further increased by local rolling. The rim is then joined to the wheel disc (2) by the weld (3). The small radial depth of the rim makes possible a large air gap between the rim and the wheel disc (2). In addition, this type of rim allows the use of smaller tyres.</p> |
