Miniature laser with lasing crystal - has pumping diode recessed into crystal to move active region away from corner irregularities

The miniature laser consists of a lasing crystal (or of a substrate carrying such a crystal and a super-substrate on top of the crystal) and dielectric reflectors covering the ends. An optical diode pump is located on top of the crystal (or the super-substrate). A recess is set into the crystal (or super-substrate) to hold the diode pump arrangement. The recess places the active region (7) of the pumped crystal (1) deeper into the body of the crystal and thereby avoids the drastic reduction in reflector (2, 3) quality caused by the 'humps' (5, 6) at the corners between the surface and ends of the crystal.
