The mechanism for automatic generation of concave or convex surfaces on cylindrical workpieces is used especially for rolling mill rolls. The grinding wheel and its motor are held on common baseplate moved parallel to the workpiece axis of rotation. The concavity or convexity is generated independently of the axial length of the cylindrical workpiece. The maximum or minimum diameter, depending on the convexity or concavity is independent of the workpiece diameter at its ends where the curvature starts and ends. The baseplate (15) is moved relative to the rotating axis of the workpiece (8). The baseplate displacing drive (24) has electromechanical converter (47, 48, 48, 50, 51). The baseplate is displaced for generating convex or concave surface independently of the total stroke of the grinding whell.
