The recording medium rocks on an air cushion formed between the stabilising plate and the recording medium. During a recording and/or playback operation an electrically highly conductive plate or foil is arranged between the recording medium and the stationary stabilising plate. This plate or reinforced foil is positioned to pivot in relation to the plane of the stabilising plate so that it can be removed as the occasion arises. The plate or foil acts as a guide to enable the recording medium to be pushed onto the stabilising plate.
