The preservative glass bottle has in its lid an opening accommodating an additional small lid or stopper, acting as a valve. There is a collar running round the opening in the main lid, against which a rubber washer in the small lid bears. While boilding, the main and small lids can be pressed down towards the bottom of the bottle by a spring stirrup or similar device. The design allows easy opening of the bottle, typically by a beer-bottle opener, without the risk of damaging the rubber washer or splintering the glass.
