A tunnelling machine (11) with a boring head (12) is pivotably mounted in the interior of such a driving shield (10). The driving shield (10) is advanced by pressing cylinders (20) which are supported in a cylindrical trailing shield (23) which can be braced against the excavation wall. The driving shield (10) is connected to the trailing shield (23) by torque supports (24) fastened to the same, the sliding head (25) of which is guided in a support guide (28) adjustable at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the torque supports (24). During the advance of the driving shield (10), rotation is imparted to the driving shield (10) in accordance with the sloping guide of the torque supports (28); the driving shield (10) can thereby be orientated in its rotary position or the rotary tendency of the driving shield (10) resulting from the reaction of the boring head (12) can be directly counteracted.
