The fuel is metered to the engine corresponding to the position of an intake volume dependent flap (3) fixed to a shaft (4) located in the air intake (1) upstream to the throttle flap (2). The air fuel ratio can be altered independently to the air intake volume for certain working conditions. For cold start and warming up conditions, a spiral spring (14) is provided to act as a variable air intake volume flap return force. The one end of the spring is fixed to the air flap shaft (4) and the free end is attached to a thermostat push rod (15). Alternatively, the free end of the spiral spring may be attached to either an electro magnet responding to exhaust gas oxygen signals or a pressure box sensitive to atmosphere pressure.
