The electric toaster comprises a housing containing the toasting chamber (1, 11) defined on its broad sides by a protective grid (9) designed as a U-shaped edge which can be inserted from above into the chambers (1, 11) where it is held on one side by retaining rails (4, 5, 6) and locked on the other in the base by sheet metal flaps (11). These flaps project out of the upright sheet metal plates (2) along the end sides of the chambers (1, 11) and bend over at the top along the rails (4, 5, 6). The cage can be made in a single or double U shape allowing easy economical mass production and fitting of the protective grid inside toasters.
