The colour-stable polymers, which contain carboxyl and hydroxyl groups and are obtained by oxidative homopolymerisation of acrolein or by oxidative copolymerisation of acrolein with acrylic acid and subsequent reaction of the polymer with a strong base by the Cannizzaro reaction, do not exhibit the properties ideal, in particular, for cosmetic preparations. This disadvantage is overcome according to the invention by adding alkali metal borohydride in an amount of from 1 to 20 percent by weight, based on the amount of monomers employed, during the preparation of the polymers in aqueous alkaline medium, and treating the mixture at room temperature or above for from 0.25 to 1 hour.
|
