1493532 Making cable harnesses; machine tool control; drilling machines WESTERN ELECTRIC CO Inc 21 Jan 1975 [23 Jan 1974] 2513/75 Headings B3A B3B and B3C [Also in Division H2] A plurality of wires 21 from sources 14 are laid out on a board 12 by a corresponding number of wiring heads 16, each of which in turn is moved over the board while its associated wire is anchored. As shown, a positioning device 17 is traversable vertically by lead screw 54 and horizontally by motors 56, 59 undo the control of a punched tape unit 18. Each head 16 is normally located on a support 11b, Fig. 3, by a spigot and socket 43, and retained by a permanent magnet 42 and feromagnetic insert 16a. Initially, each wire is fed through tension rolls and a tension detector which can stop operations if the wire breaks, through guides 24, 27, round a capstan 28 on the respective head, through guide 29, and is anchored manually on pin 32. To lay out a wire of a wire harness the device 17 is positioned automatically over a lug 16b on the respective head, and secures it by a solenoid or air motor operated pin 44, or by an electromagnet more effective than magnet 42. The postioning device 17 then removes the head from support 11b, winds the wire round achor pin 19a, lays the wire out as required, and then winds it around pin 19a again or another anchor pin 19b as the case may be, and returns the head to its starting place. The wire is then severed between pins 32 and 19a, and between the final anchor pin and guide 29. While the head is travelling, capstan 28 effects a positive feed of the wire in predetermined fashion. On completion of all wiring, the board is removed and replaced, and the harness completed. The positioning device 17 may be replaced by a drill so that the apparatus can be used to make holes for the pins in a board. More than one harness may be laid out at a time. |
