1493407 Adhesive sheet material IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 17 Oct 1975 [16 Dec 1974] 54172/74 Heading B2E A decorative sheet material for adherent application to a surface has a decorative surface and a working surface, the working surface having continuous coating of tacky pressure-sensitive adhesive carrying a discontinuous layer of resilient non-adhesive particles. The sheet material may be paper, synthetic fibre mat, plastics material film or foil, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene or foamed polyethylene or polypropylene or combinations thereof, and may be decorated by printing or embossing or by laminating a woven or non-woven fabric or metallic foil thereto. The adhesive which may be curable after the sheet has been adhered to the support surface, may be an alkyd resin, a natural or synthetic rubber preferably with a tackifying resin, polyisobutylene, a polyvinyl alkyl ether, vinyl acetate copolymer or acrylic ester polymer or copolymer, and may be applied as a solution, an emulsion or a hot melt. The resilient particles may be partially embedded in or merely adherently on the adhesive layer. They may be sprinkled or otherwise distributed as pre-formed particles on the adhesive layer or formed in situ thereon by printing a discontinuous layer or spraying droplets of foamable material onto the adhesive layer and then causing it to foam e.g. by heating. The resilient particles may be a natural or synthetic rubber or a foamed organic polymer such as polyurethane, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polypropylene or polystyrene. The adhesive layer and particles may be covered with a release paper which is removed prior to attachment of the sheet to a surface. The particles give the adhesive sheet material the ability to be moved about on the surface to which it is to adhere for adjusting its position. When in place the application of firm pressure compresses the particles and firm adhesion of the sheet to the surface occurrs.
