1493910 Preparation of diphenyl ethers BAYER AG 19 Oct 1976 [21 Oct 1975] 43313/76 Heading C2C Diphenyl ethers substituted in the 4,4<SP>1</SP>- position and/or the 2,2<SP>1</SP>-position are prepared by reacting a reactive benzene coumpound, which is substituted in the 1-position and the 4-position or in the 1-position and the 2-position, with a salt of nitrous acid in water and in the presence of a quarternary onium salt. Preferably the quarternary onium salt is a compound of in which Z represents nitrogen or phosphorus, R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 are identical or different and each represents an optionally substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl group, or two adjacent radicals amongst R 1 , R 2 , R 3 and R 4 , together with the central atom Z and optionally one or more further hetero-atoms, form a heterocyclic structure, and X- represents a halide, cyanide or hydroxyl ion. Preferably the reactive benzene compound is a compound of the formula wherein Y represents a halogen atom or a nitro group, R represents a nitro group, a cyano group or a group of the formula R<SP>11</SP>SO 2 in which R<SP>11</SP> is an alkyl or aryl group optionally substituted by halogen, and occupies the ortho or para-position relative to Y, and R<SP>1</SP> is a hydrogen, fluorine or chlorine atom or a C 1 -C 4 -alkyl, C 1 -C 4 -alkoxy or C 1 -C 4 alkylmercapto radical which is optionally substituted by halogen or by a group of the formula N(R<SP>11</SP>) 2 .
