1426417 Recovering potassium hydroxide solution and zinc oxide from zincate solutions SAFT-SOC DES ACCUMULATEURS FIXES ET DE TRACTION and COMPAGNIE ROYALE ASTURIENNE DES MINES 21 June 1974 [26 June 1973] 27634/74 Heading C1A [Also in Division H1] Potassium hydroxide solution and zinc oxide are recovered from aqueous solutions of potassium zincate by adding a selective solvent for potassium hydroxide which is miscible with water to the zincate solution, filtering off the zinc oxide precipitate obtained and treating the mother liquor to separate the aqueous potassium hydroxide solution from the solvent. The selective solvent may be methanol, ethanol or a mixture thereof. The volume ratio of methanol to the zincate solution may be between 1 and 5. Potassium hydroxide solution may be separated from the solvent by fractional distillation. The above method is used to recover zinc and electrolyte from zinc batteries.
