A passive electro-optical liquid crystal display element is designed to provide good definition in night time conditions without impairment of daytime definition. The liquid crystal cell (1) has one polariser (2, 3) on either side. A light source (4) is embedded in a casing (6) containing a light transmitting medium (5). A diffusion layer (7) is located between the liquid crystal element and light source. The inner surface of the casing (6) is reflective and the top surface has apertures between bridging sections to allow both the passage of external ambient light (9) and the internally generated light (4). |
