Process and appts. removal and fixation of urinary metabolites on an immobilising support, which is easily transportable to an analysis centre, comprises (a)-contacting the support with the urine so as to remove a sample and fix the desired metabolite onto the support accompanied by certain unwanted metabolites; (b) transporting the support to the analysis centre; (c) eliminating the unwanted metabolites (those which would interfere with the subsequent determination of the desired metabolite) from the support; (d) eluting the desired metabolite and determining its concn. The support is paper which contains a material which is readily activated before use. The result of the metabolite determination may be expressed w.r.t. the result of the determn. of a metabolite in which the excretion is constant over period of time. Used for determn. of urinary metabolites such as delta-amino-levulinic acid or ALA (metabolite characteristic of lead poisoning), trichloroacetic acid and trichloroethylene intoxication) and creatinine. The amt. of urine removed depends on the paper used and for a given size of paper of constant quality, the amt. is known with good accuracy. The expression of the result w.r.t. the result of the determn. of a metabolite whose excretion is constant avoids false results due to variation on the amt. of urine removed and the different dilution of the urine.
