Prepn. of (cyclo)aliphatic or aromatic, mono- or poly-valent tertiary amines (I) having >=1 N-bound CH3 gp., comprises reacting the corresp. prim. or sec. amine (II) with HCHO and H2 in the liq. phase. The reaction is carried out in a fixed bed of nearly carrier-free hydrogenation catalyst consisting of >=60% Co and 10-30% Cu, opt. with is not >20% of the Co replaced by Ni. Pref. a soln. of HCHO and (II) are introduced separately in the liq. circuit and reaction is at is not >110 degrees C. (I) are e.g. polymerisation catalyst; hardeners for synthetic polyurethane resins, corrosion inhibitors and auxiliaries in washing of synthesis gas. Yields are >97%. Catalyst disintegration and formation of HCOOH and hexahydrotriazine by-prods. are minimised.
