The safety belt (1) is intended to be slung over the chest of a person seated in a vehicle. The ends (4, 12) are coupled such that when one end is paid out, the other end is taken up and vice versa. The take-up and pay-out rate of one end is different from the corresponding pay-out and take-up rate of the other end. The belt may run through first (6) and second (11) anchoring points adjacent to shoulders and hops respectively the belt turning through an angle in excess of 270 deg. at each anchoring point. One end of the belt may be secured (2) to the vehicle body (3) and run from there over a pulley (4) to the other end secured to a bracket (5) carrying the pulley.
