The speed of drying og varnishes based on unsaturated polyester resins can be increased, and their storage stability improved, by incorporating new additional accelerators of formula (I): where R1 and R2 are 1-3C alkyl, opt. substd. by 1-4C aliphatic, 5-6C cycloaliphatic, or 1-4C alkoxy. New moulding and coatng compsns. that are hardenable after addition of (all percentages based on total wt. of A and B) 0.1-8.0% (pref. 0.3-5.0%) of polymerisation initiators (C), contain (A) 20-90% (pref. 40-70%) of alpha, beta-ethylenically unsatd. polyesters and (B) 80-10% (pref. 60-30%)of comonomers, pref, alpha-vinyl substd. or beta-allyl substd. esp. styrene, (D) 0.001-0.1% (pref. 0.01-0.1%) of inhibitors e.g. phenyl deriv. (E) 0.001 5.0% (pref. 0.01-0.1%) of usual accelerators, e.g. mercaptans, (F) opt. 0.01-1.0% (pref. 0.03-0.3%) of paraffin or other waxes. (G) 0.05-5.0% (pref. 0.1-1.5%) of additional accelerators of formula (II): (where X = O, S or pref. NR4, R3 is pref. CH3 or COORk, R4 is pref. H or CH3, R5 = H, 1-8C aliphatic or aromatic gp.). and (H) 0.05-5.0% (pref. 0.1-1.5%) of additional accelerators of formula (I). Cpds. (I) and (IIe are very resistant to storage but also facilitate rapid attainment of rubbing resistance of polyester resins on drying. Pref. cpds. (IIe are derivs. of pyrrolidone-2 and pref. cpds. (I) are derivs. of thiane. |
