A conveyor belt carries the items through a closed tunnel, powder being poured from overhead jets on to the mites as they are rotated by being drawn past a series of fixed deflector blades. Excess powder is continually cleared from the tunnel by a vacuum system which returns powder to a supply, mixer tank from which it is recycled to the jets. Before items leave the tunnel, they pass from the belt onto a vibrator plate which shakes off loose powder to be returned to the supply tank. The band is pref. made of food quality plastic, e.g. PVC, or stainless steel and may be perforated. Tunnel inlet and outlet are pref. screened from the atmos. by suction air curtains. Used esp. of dusting sausages with seasoning. Also suitable for dusting fruit and vegetables in order to preserve them. Process mechanises a previously manual operation. The item is covered with a uniform coating of max. thickness. The sprinkling process is totally enclosed to prevent pollution of surrounding atmos. Powder is recycled for economy. |
