The present invention relates to a note process apparatus and a method for controlling the operation thereof. The apparatus includes: a domination recognition unit which recognizes a domination of a note by using a note image; an ultrasonic wave transmission unit which has a plurality of ultrasonic wave transmission modules; a control unit which selects a part of the plurality of ultrasonic wave transmission modules prepared in the ultrasonic wave transmission unit based on the width of the note according to the recognized domination and allows ultrasonic waves to be transmitted; an ultrasonic wave reception unit which is located at a location facing the ultrasonic wave transmission unit with the note being transferred therebetween and has a plurality of ultrasonic wave reception sensors receiving the ultrasonic waves transmitted from the selected ultrasonic wave transmission modules and penetrating the note; and a thickness detection unit which detects the thickness of the note by using the ultrasonic waves received from the ultrasonic wave reception unit. |
