Method of treating sewage or similar effluent by the introduction of an oxygen-emitting gas is carried out by introducing the oxygen-contg. gas (e.g., air) into the effluent as it flows through a pipe. Pref. the effluent flows at least once upwards and once downwards within the pipe and the oxygen emitting gas is introduced at the start of the upward movement, pref. also at the end of the downward movement.
