Error check and correction of binary data recorded in input stage of number of n channels or multi-track magnetic tape as bit parallel data characters. Multi-position check characters are formed. The bit parallel data characters are recorded by blocks in succession. The input stage (2, 22) is designed as a parallel-to-series converter with shift register which transfers data in series to a data line (16). It is controlled by a cyclically repeating sequence of (n+1/ clock pulses which are produced by means of a clock generator. The first clock pulse is distinguished as a starting clock pulse.
