A step-by-step drive mechanism coupling a continuously rotating shaft 36, Figs. 3, 4, of a fluid flow meter to a counter 54 having carry mechanism 27, comprises a worm 42 splined 44 to the shaft, the worm having a helical shaped cam-face 48 at its bottom end which bears on a cam follower 50, the pitch of the cam being such so that as the shaft 36 rotates, the worm rotates and rises on its splines and causes no rotation of the counter 54 until the end of a revolution of the shaft when the end of the cam helix is reached and the worm is abruptly jerked back to its lowest position thereby advancing the counter by one step. The cam follower 50 is resiliently mounted so that if the shaft 36 is rotated backwards, it can be deflected by the vertical shoulder 58 of the cam. Each denomination of the counter includes a coded scale enabling remote electrical read-out by a plug-in device carried by a meter reader, see Specification 1,270,554 (Division G4). |
