The trailer coupling brings the trailer closer to the tractor when the vehicle is moving in the straight direction and extends when negotiating bends. This provides increased loading space together with an improved control of the trailer. The trailer draw bar (10) is fitted to a conventional coupling (13) carried by a cross member (14) at the rear of the tractor. The cross member is formed as a slide to move in two parallel guides (17) fitted along the vehicle chassis. The cross member is displaced by two hydraulic units (16). The hydraulic units are actuated by the steering wheel position and the cross member is drawn in for the straight ahead and pushed out correspondingly to the steering lock.
