The versatile grill unit for heating up food such as meat, fish, bread, etc., includes two electrically heated base plates (1, 2) which have their heat surfaces facing each other and are designed for connection with insert plates (5) which can be placed in contact with the hot surfaces. The insert plates which are suitable for grilling meat, cooking waffles, etc., are easy to exchange giving the grill a wide useful range. To ensure an easy positioning of the plates, the heat surfaces of the base plates (1, 2) are pref. provided with recesses (12) whilst the insert plates are provided with protrusions to fit into them.
